CHRISTIANSBURG, VIRGINIA - On January 11, 2019, around 9:15 p.m., authorities responded to a call regarding a two-year-old boy who had fallen and was unresponsive at a house in the 400 block of Zinc Lane. Emergency medical technicians began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A heartbeat was detected and the toddler was immediately taken to LewisGale Hospital Montgomery. The boy was later airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He died on January 13, 2019 at 7:40 p.m.. A forensic examination unveiled that the injuries were not consistent with a fall. Kayla Nicole Thomas, 25, the mother of the child, left her son with her live-in boyfriend, McKenzie Kyle Hellman, 25, who is in custody and charged in connection to the child's death.
McKenzie Kyle Hellman is charged with homicide, including aggravated sexual battery, inanimate sexual penetration and possession of child pornography. Kayla Nicole Thomas was arrested and charged with making child porn and sexually assaulting children. Both suspects are being without bond in the Western Virginia Regional Jail. Both suspects are scheduled for Feb. 28, 2019 preliminary hearings in the county’s Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
